Bought this froma guy on ccraigs list the day before we left on tour for $40. I gave the guy an extra $5 for train fare, and because I am a wicked nice guy.
I put in a fresh battery and plugged it in at the soundcheck in Milford, all excited... throw on a guitar and hit the switch... bzzt, bzzt, nothing. Damn. Hit the pedal on the floor, full distortion, click pedal off and on again... nothing. I took it apart, I don't know what I am doing, so I didn't see anything wrong.
Anyway, texted the guy, he replies "I tested it the night before I sold it to you, so I don't know what to tell you."
I just texted back "I guess I lose this time." What an ass.
Well, at least it's aptly named.
ReplyDeleteHey Jason, might well be the switch... Had similar temperamental problem with a Rat and another pedal before, and all it took was some switch cleaner to be sprayed into the switch and all was cool... Might be worth checking rather than an electrical fault?

This has happened to one of my fuzz pedals- I'd guess it's not a lost cause. Could definitely be the switch, this can be replaced. (though not on tour probably, unless you've got a tool kit). One time, I had tightened the retaining screws on the volume/sustain knobs too much and this somehow led to a bad connection inside the pot. Definitely try some spray contact cleaner/lube in the pots, remove the knobs and re-install, check the jacks for tension against the 1/4" plugs. Change the battery. These are the more common failures in pedals. Components don't tend to 'burn out' very often.
